Discombra

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 5:23pm -- Dav

We composed this piece for a collaboration with choreographer Erin Bomboy. She made a project called The Public Decides for which she solicited 5 minute compositions. The five that she selected were presented with identical choreography. The audience was then asked to vote for the piece that they felt worked best with the choreography.

We used this as a chance to explore our voice & electronics style by repurposing a song by GF Handel. We'll be expanding Discombra into a polished work, and may use it as the seed for an entire album... time will tell.

Monkey Lab

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 5:17pm -- Dav

Monkey Lab is the first piece that Rob Voisey and I created under the moniker Elevator Machine Room. It is a ‘spoken-word opera’ in the storytelling traditions of Robert Ashley’s operas, Laurie Anderson’s performance art, and Ira Glass’s This American Life. Its artistry relies not only on the content of the story but also on the telling. Many of the methods and structure parallel musical composition. Plot, pacing, and inflection relate directly to form, tempo, and timbre respectively.

The Morning After

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 4:51pm -- Dav

It’s here. The End. And whether it’s fiery and violent, or quick like turning out the light, Elevator Machine Room brings us the perfect sound track in The Morning After. Experimental soundscapes, deep bass, and spoken word usher through the final steps of this year-long eschatological path, and make it enjoyable, too.

King of Iniquity

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 4:49pm -- Dav

The man behind the B’ak’tun Waning project, David Morneau, brings us the latest installment, just in time for Mardi Gras. But this is I.B.N. style Mardi Gras, after all, and King of Iniquity will have your swole up Tuesday bursting into a million ruined colors that that let you see forever.

Goodbye

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 3:51pm -- Dav

Composed for Suzanne Kompass & Sean O'Boyle’s “Fifteen Minutes of Fame”

This duet is based on my favorite jazz ballad: Charles Mingus’s Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. The clarinet part is completely improvised, though should support the harmonies for the singer. There is no text, the singer is encouraged to use whichever vowel sound(s) she prefers.

Part-Partita

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 3:49pm -- Dav

Composed for Douglas DaSilva's "My Father's Violin" project, which included an extended Fifteen Minutes of Fame concert.

While contemplating what to compose for this project, I recalled that my own father is a fan of Bach's unaccompanied string pieces. From there it was an easy step to find and adapt a small portion of the Sarabande from Bach's Partita no.2 in d minor. Part-Partita is a meditation on the Bach, lost in thought and in time.

Tangled Memories

Mon, 01/07/2013 - 3:46pm -- Dav

Composed for Anne Goldberg’s “15 Minutes of Fame”

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of the English Horn is the famous solo from the 2nd movement of Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony. I think this is due to the number of times I listened to this work as a teenager. To my young mind this was one of the greatest pieces of music ever. Now, I don’t much care for it all.... It’s funny how tastes change over time. Tangled Memories dissects the original solo, in search of my youthful ennui.
